Great shot! This is one bird I would like to see close-up in the wild. Have seen them from a distance in Scotland, but nothing like this close!
@papajohn replied: Thanks for the kind words Phillip. Being from Chicago where osprey photo ops are infrequent, at best, I itched for a few decent ops for several years until my wife and I visited Florida 3 years ago. Not only are they plentiful, but they are so used to people down there, hang out in the right places long enough and those opportunities seem endless. Last year I got some incredible shots of them nesting and flying in and out of the nest and this year I stumbled on an inland lake with as many as five osprey bathing no more than 10 feet off shore and I found that if I pulled my car into a decent position when they were not there and then sat patiently for a bit, they would fly in every 20 minutes of so within maybe 75 feet of my car and I got dozens of amazing shots of them bathing. The shot in this post was because I happened to sit down on a bench in a quiet harbor to change batteries when this osprey flew in and landed on a pier post less than 50 feet from me in excellent light.

Wow! IN the moment, John. Well done. We have a few of the Florida, Osprey around here for the summer. I get lots of shots but nothing quite like this. Nice to see you and Happy New Year.
@papajohn replied: Thanks for the kind words Ken and Happy New Year to you as well! Curious, Where is "Around Here"?

wow! that is a 'close-up'!!
@papajohn replied: I was sitting on a bench in a harbor when this guy came flying in and landed about 29 feet in front of me in perfect light Marthe. I happened to have my 600 mm so most of the shots I got were full frame. He actually sat there for about half an hour while I got dozens of different poses. It became obvious that he was aware of me and even that he could hear my shutter click, but it didn't seem to bother him much. Great opportunities!! I am in the Chicago area and this was in Florida where the osprey are not only plentiful, but so much tamer to humans than the few we have rare opportunity to see in Chicago. I found another spot in Fla. where there were anywhere from 1 to 5 osprey bathing in shallow water and I could plant my car along the shore and just wait for them to fly in and then I shot right out my window. Have hundreds of very cool shots of them bathing, but have not had much time to process them yet. I will be posting a few here soon.
