Picture of an immature merganser consuming a really big fish...probably a chum or pink salmon smelt. Mergansers are massive consumers of fish. In this situation, an adult bird, probably the female, landed her flock of seven offspring right at the mouth of a deep stream at high tide. I just happened to be there. In a coordinated movement, the eight birds drove fish up the stream a short distance and then fed. Pretty sure that each immature ate fish about this size...the female consumed two. The family then moved to a cobble beach on the opposite side of the stream and took a nap. North end of Mitkof Island, Petersburg, Alaska.
