Nice shot Brian. I think its a Long-billed Dowitcher. It looks like it has an entirely rufous belly with no white and its neck is not heavily spotted like a Short-billed.
@Brian replied: I think you are right about this. I have sent the photo off to a regional authority. This is my first sighting. To make things more interesting, this bird was flying with another type of sandpiper, possibly spotted sandpipers. More birds (and fish and bears) are moving into our area.

A beautiful bird...a sandpiper known as a dowitcher. There a several varieties, but not sure of the precise identification. Petersburg, Alaska.
