A large flock of dunlins orbiting over the Skagit River Flats. An experienced birder at the viewing site numbered this concentration at about 8,500. They maintain an altitude of about 1,000 feet until the tide begins to run out, then they dive for the mud. By following this strategy, the dunlins remain out of the range of the local hawk population. Near Anacortes, Washington.
