Your patience paid off. The people that left too early were not the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree ;-))
Great shot!

Perhaps not the most original of angles, but who cares - it's a stunning view however many times it's been seen before! Drove up from Grand canyon village just to see this, and was beginning to think it was all a big waste of time – it was overly cloudy and the sunset itself was pretty unexciting for the 40 or so of us watching. Shortly all but 3 people left and then the sky lit up. First like this and then bright pink right across. Fantastic - definitely worth the 2hr drive each direction! ! I kept turning my camera portrait and then landscape. Even with a wide angle, it was hard to get the sky and the whole bend into the frame satisfactorily. In the end, I think this (slightly cropped portrait) shot was my favourite from the evening.
